NEW ICC REGULATIONS – COVID ERA | ANALYSIS

The Covid – 19 pandemic has had a very big effect on the sports industry. Reacting to the pandemic, the International Cricket Council approved and released many interim regulation changes for the betterment of the people related to the sport and sport itself.

The new regulations are every interesting and there analysis becomes the most important thing.

Starting with the biggest and the most impactful interim regulation :

BAN ON APPLYING SALIVA TO THE BALL

A ban on the use of Saliva has been imposed, citing medical reasons as using saliva may lead to the spread of the Covid – 19 virus amongst the players and the umpires on the playing field. Strict punishments have been put in place. This will be a major disadvantage for the seamers as the step of applying saliva is very important to them. This will have a great impact on them. There were talks about the use of sweat, but even that might be medically problematic(no conformation) and is even not that effective.

Just like Anil Kumble said, spinners will actually get a chance ti shine as seamers will only remain as fast bowlers mostly but spinners will not be affected by this decision as such. The pitches could be made spinner friendly if possible and the team composition might just change a little, atleast for the time being.

There will be some adaptations even for the spinners, as they normally come late in the innings and now they might come earlier as well.

But keeping in mind, that all teams will face this problem. There shouldn’t be the need of spinners coming early but yes it is a very essential tactic. Pressure is always rising!

NON – NEUTRAL UMPIRES

Keeping in mind the travel restrictions and the associated risks, the ICC CEC has decided that matches will not require neutral umpires for the interim period. This might also lead to presence of less – experience umpires on field and hence may lead to several incorrect or controversial decisions. Umpires should still think with a neutral mindset.

Spielens – Prakhar Drolia suggests – Umpires from both countries should be present as the players will anyway travel, so, the umpires can travel with them.

ONE EXTRA UNSUCCESSFUL DRS

The ICC CEC has agreed on allowing one extra unsuccessful DRS, keeping in mind the new interim regulation regarding the umpires. This means that each team will get 3 unsuccessful DRS appeals(per innings) in Test Matches and 2 unsuccessful DRS appeals(per innings) in white – ball formats(ODIs and T20Is (ICC doesn’t host T10s).

This will be very beneficial as many teams are just not that right with their appeals but this will also lead to many more correct decisions. The ICC says that due the interim regulations regarding the umpires, some matches may have less – experienced and less accurate or precise umpires. Teams will have a chance at possibly more fairer matches with this interim regulation.

Should this rule be made permanent?

Maybe yes and maybe not. Less number of DRS appeals available to the teams keeps them on the edge for thinking about appealing whenever there is a conflict of decision. There should rather be the use of technology and abolish the need of DRS but some argue that the presence of human umpires keeps the spirit of the game.

What do you think?

COVID – 19 REPLACEMENTS

Just like the Concussion Substitution, the COVID – 19 substitution will enable teams to get a substitution on field for a player who feels unwell with even the most minor COVID – 19 symptom(s). Good for medical safety and players’ health.

ALLOWANCE OF ONE EXTRA LOGO ON TEST MATCH TEAM JERSEY

This will allow one logo of a specific size to be placed on the chest area of the Test match jersey. Good for revenue collections.

Uncertainty still looms over the world cup and the T20 world cups.
