WHAT STRATEGY SHOULD ? – 3 TEAM CRICKET – PART 1

The first 3TC match was held in South Africa on 19th July wherein 3 teams participated in one single 36 over match. Each team played a total of 24 overs out of which they played 12 overs in one half of the match which included half of the batting and half of the bowling innings in a division of 6 overs for each per half.

This is Part 1 of the blogposts discussing strategies for the 3TC format.

The format is completely different from the basic cricketing format followed till this format came into existence.

LET’S WRITE STRATEGIES

The format is different and hence so do the strategies. The main thing that makes the strategy so different is that each team has two definite structured halves, for both the batting and bowling innings.

STRATEGY 1: DISTRIBUTING THE BATSMEN AND BOWLERS

The batsmen also need to not only be decided as per the order but also as per that at which position will they have a higher probability of playing in the second half of the match and plan accordingly.

The spot would also be affected by as to how much each team scores in the first half. If Team A performs the worst out of 3 of the teams in the first half then they need more luck in the second half and would need their best player to bat for them and would also require their best bowlers to bowl in the second half to restrict the others.

This strategy can also be seen in two ways:

  1. The best bowlers and batsmen bat in the first half to put on a humongous total, so that the second half can be easier to go through.
  2. The first half should be played in a moderate manner and the second half should be played in powerplay mode.

Well, Spielens – Prakhar Drolia suggests that:

  1. Each match’s strategy should really depend on how the draw comes out to be, since the draw decides the batting and bowling order – Since, if a team is starting off the match, then they would require a humongous start since the other two teams who will bat next, need to pressurized instead of being giving an easy and self – planned first innings. This will lead to their plans being manipulated by the team who bats first. If the first team performs badly (something like 40 – 3 after the first 6 overs), then there will also be pressure on their bowlers later on.
  2. The second half should be like the second innings of a Super Over. The teams have seen the general performance of all teams till then and the strategy could be made according to the total accumulated performance and expected performance of the other team.
  3. The batting order should be as such that there are no tailenders because what everyone gets is a non power play six overs. The batting order should be real – time.
  4. The best bowler should get atleast 1 over in the second half as well as the first half of the match.

WHY?

The 3TC is a sport which has several factors as because of its format, each team has two face two other team. The team needs to utilise its best players against both of those teams but also decide on how to distribute the others, specially with the pitch changing condition, and the batting order being decided by the scoring in the first half.

A partnership such as the one between AB De Villiers and Aiden Markram is what is needed. AB De Villiers came in after the first wicket fell and they both continued their partnership into the second half. This gives them a chance to take more risks in the second half as they do not have the fear of losing all wickets before the end of their innings. And that is what they, alongwith the ‘Kites’ team exactly did.

The second innings is like the death overs but in a powerplay mode and hence, that is when the power hitting is needed. After all, even the 7th batsman can score alone, in even runs (2, 4 & 6).

THAT IS STRATEGY 1. MORE STRATEGIES IN MORE BLOG POSTS!
