THE FRIDAY SENSE – Formula 1 Rolex Belgian Grand Prix 2020

The Belgian Grand Prix was off to a damp kind of start with there being rain but not during the sessions. The atmosphere was dampened a bit for Haas due to engine issues and for Daniel Ricciardo due to unspecified issues in his car. Overall, the cars were fast and the drivers were fighting the corners properly and the escalation changes were also scaled properly as some drivers did face issues in the last pair of corners. There were several aspects and identifications during the two Free Practice sessions.

This is what the Friday Sense tells us:

  • FERRARI? YES! YOU HAVE GOT A SERIOUS ENGINE PROBLEM. YES, WE KNOW. And so do all the teams using the Ferrari engine. This problem is very serious and has a lot of impact since the car’s dynamics are also based upon the speed the car can reach as the outcome would be different at different speeds. Ferrari’s engine is slow and most of their customers have not been able to work out the other dynamics around that. It would be even more sad if they expected a much faster engine and had decided the cars accordingly but were given a surprise during the Pre – Season Winter testing.
    • This will have a huge impact during the Belgian Grand Prix since cars which have a high speed and proper handling fair better due to the layout of the circuit. A car which can take more pressure and has a high top speed.
  • THERE MIGHT BE A DEFINITE SEPARATION. The separation between the fast and the slow cars might be very evident in the Belgian Grand Prix, if it is a dry race as constructors who are using the Ferrari engine seemed to not be able to climb up the ladder whereas most of the other teams performed very well, especially Renault. The gap between the cars is very less but there is a clear distinction which again is due to the difference in the speeds. If anyone can qualify within the Top 12, they have a good chance for competing towards the front. Until and unless it’s either a wet race or a wet qualifying.
  • THE WET RACE vs THE DRY RACE. Big Difference, especially if we have have a wet qualifying. If it is a wet race, the action at Spa – Francorchamps could be high drama. The turns are tricky and drivers have been witnessed failing to maintain the racing line and if it rains even it becomes even harder especially with the speed that the circuit allows and the escalation changes and the tricky corner pairs.

All in All, it can be a high drama weekend and Vettel might again be eliminated in Q2
