THE FRIDAY SENSE – Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio Della Toscana Ferrari 1000 2020

The Tuscan Grand Prix which marks a special event of being Ferrari’s 1000th race in Formula 1 and also marks a new track on the calendar, also 20 years of Kimi Raikkonen’s first ever Formula 1 test drive with Sauber and also Vettel’s move to Aston Martin as Perez’s contract gets terminated by Racing Point at the end of 2020. It was an interesting and intriguing Friday at an awesome circuit Marvelous Mugello!

This is what the Friday Sense tells brains:

  • Tyres will be key and it will be interesting to see as to how teams maintain them especially with the extreme heat predicted. – The Mugello circuit is known to be extremely demanding especially with its high downforce and the number of corners. The tyres have to go through a lot and also the heat is on around the circuit and hence, as seen, the tyres are heating pretty fast and this was resulting in cars doing a fast lap and immediately slowing down and reaching very low speeds. The structure of the track and the layout also pts a lot of pressure on the tyre.
    • This is resulting into new tyre management experiments and processes. Teams will definitely be exploring a lot of avenues including the number of stops that they can afford during the race.
  • Mercedes are fast but as learned from the previous raes, especially the one in Monza that it cannot follow and overtake other cars that well and this will play into the race a lot as they do have the speed to create a good gap but even one mistake can cause a lot of trouble as cars will have to follow pretty well on this track and with the high downforce coming into play, almost all teams will be performing good since they do not have to focus on the low downforce.
    • Mercedes also have more tyre issues due to their setup and the engine mode settings have made Bottas have a tough time and hence, Mercedes cannot afford even the minutest of errors since that can cause them a lot on this track.
  • The corners are extremely fast and such corners which are so fast and smooth to look at, also do require a lot of handling from the drivers and even the minutest of precision errors and moving away from the racing line can lead them off the track and/or spin the car around, which can completely damage their race on such a track.
  • The first lap will be the most interesting one as this wiggly circuit has a very long straight to start with and then very fast corners which lead to a very long straight in Sector 3 which then becomes the straight in Sector 1 as the start/finish line is located on that straight. The Mercedes car will look at capitalising on the straight in Sector 1 and get through the first few corners with full throttle but the first corner does require braking and anyone starting in Top 5 can take a very good slipstream at the start and use that on the straight while keeping the inside line and stretching the line till after Turn 3.

All in all, the teams have a lot of data to collect and experimentation to do and the qualifying which decides the starting grid will be of very high importance for certain teams in the F1 Tuscan Grand Prix 2020.
