Mi still had a great start and definitely learned a lot. Read the Analysis down below!

A LESSER KNOWN FACT: CSK ARE ALSO THE CHAMPIONS OF THE AIRTEL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2010

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS BOWLING AND FIELDING

As noted before, CSK are facing tis issue of lack of the number of pace bowlers a little in the start of the season. The pitch as mentioned above, was expected to support a little of pace and bounce today and not necessarily spin but it favoured both kind of bowlers equally. CSK weren’t able to utilise their bowlers well in the powerplay overs as the fast bowlers were still trying to find their line and length. Piyush Chawla then made the breakthrough with his spin as the ball was turning.

CSK actually lost the powerplay due to their sloppy and clumsy fielding. They missed several chances to stop runs and this is where the pressure on the bowlers also increased. Those imperfect lines could also have been played into advantage CSK but their sloppy fielding let Rohit and De Kock keep rotating the strike and the bowlers were hence, having even more trouble finding the correct line.

The addition of Piyush Chawla to the team has definitely only come as a great help for CSK, with him not only being a great addition to the Playing XI but also providing a great option as a leg – spinner. Piyush Chawla will remain to be an integral part for CSK in 2020 and the decision to let him go might hurt KKR.

Dhoni was still able to work it out and used the pitch to get the wickets in the second half of the first innings. MI were still not getting that pressurised and this was because the bowlers and fielders were still giving away a lot of runs. Faf Du Plessis was a very integral part in helping CSK keep the wickets falling towards the end and a fieldr like him is what CSK need in most of their players.

Overall, the bowling got better as the bowlers understood the pitch behaviour better and the field opened up more and more. They were also helped in the death overs by the fall of wickets that had taken place in the deep a little earlier.

MI BATTING

Mumbai Indians were all about power in the match and looked to be whipping the ball out but this is also what hurt MI a bit. Their momentum fell a lot when they weren’t being able to get those sixes and fours and this is concerning and MI need to work on their consistency and caution.

They had a lot of batting power and that is what got them par the 150 mark but most of the batsmen made short contributions and no one stuck to the crease that well to provide that support to the player at the other end. That was the only area where MI lacked a bit, otherwise, the whole package that they have of batsmen is very promising. They were also helped a lot by the fact that the CSK bowlers were trying to understand the mitch in the first half of the first innings.

Rohit Sharma didn’t perform that well again but Quinton De Cock helped MI get out of the powerplay and capitalise in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma did give the Dream11 IPL 2020 a great start and the few balls he played, he did do very well in rotating the strike. Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard provided that power hitting in the middle overs as Saurabh Tiwary used his power to get some flicks to keep the momentum up.

MI BOWLING

As said earlier, they were helped by them bowling 2nd as they were able to understand how the pitch was behaving by looking at and analysing what happened in the first innings but also faced issues as later on it was noticed that the ball seemed to get a little too moist for the spin bowlers.

MI’s main major problem was their field setup. There fielders just weren’t set at the right place. That is the whole reason as to why they lost so many opportunities of making wickets fall for CSK. They have a great bowler line up but they need to work out their field setup. Even when they started getting those wickets again towards the end, the field setup still had just so many problems that Faf du Plessis was able to easily exploit it.

CSK BATTING

Chennai Super Kings struggled with their batting at the start which was mostly fuelled by how the MI bowlers were able to understand the pitch and bowl the right lines from the first over itself, and also the factor that Murali Vijay was given out by the on-ground umpire and he did not review it which is very weird, and it turned out to be Not – Out in reality but this did not upset CSK. CSK did face a lot of troubles in the first half of the second innings in finding their sweet spots and building up the momentum but their partnership stayed between Rayudu and du Plessis and that fuelled the aggressive and smooth batting as the match progressed.

Rayudu had a high boundary percentage and du Plessis stuck to the crease and kept handing him the strike and rotating the strike, this kept CSK going and they were able to use the fielding problems of MI to their advantage as well. CSK were also helped by the wealth of batsmen they have who can play in several situation as per the situation. The late wicket fall helped them keep the momentum up because of the depth in the batting line up and that is what helped them get that win.

M.S. Dhoni will probably require a bit more time to get back into batting form but their batting line up is just the mix they need.

The decision to send Sam Curran seemed a little weird and Dhoni was expected to be a better choice but that short bust that the fine cricketer provided to CSK helped them cruise to victory and also helped keep the pressure off M.S. Dhoni.

Overall, it was a fantastic start to the Indian Premier League’s 13th edition. A great tournament awaits.
