THE FRIDAY SENSE: Formula 1 Aramco Grosser Preis Der Eifel 2020

Well, there was no track time for any of the drivers on Friday due to the rain which is expected to continue throughout the weekend, even posing a threat over the three sessions left. In this blogpost, analysing what was learnt throughout the day, other developments and possible exciting matchups.

This is what The Friday Sense tells brains:

  • Weather will be the most important factor again in the Grand Prix in Germany. Nürburgring is located in an area in West Germany, where the weather can be unpredictable at times and the weather can be very severe. It is located in the Rhineland area and the rain that has come this time around has brought in fog/mist with it and the cold temperatures that prevail make the situation worse.
    • The Free Practice sessions were mainly cancelled because the medical helicopter couldn’t take off and reach its destination(the nearest designated hospital) in time due to the mist. That does not allow any session to start as it becomes a risk to driver safety in a situation of a severe crash. The factor of the location of the circuit plays a role here as well. There are hills around the circuit, so the helicopter has to take more height, the mist is also prevalent, and the only way to reach a nearby hospital fast and within the requisite time is by air.
    • The track was wet, bt not not wet enough to stop a session from taking place. The main concern are the cold temperatures for the drivers and constructors in general. The cold temperatures may aid in cooling the car and its systems but such low temperatures makes it hard to get the tyres up to the proper temperature mark, helping with gaining the required grip.
    • The drivers are hoping that they get to use the Intermediate or the Wet tyres as they are easier to be heated to the required temperatures. This can only happen in slightly wet to completely wet track situations. The forecast for Sunday is rain and temperatures are expected to be very low.
    • Sessions scheduled for Saturday might take place due to a more favourable weather condition throughout the day but yes dry weather tyres are not expected to come out on the track very soon.
    • It is expected that it will stay windy which is a bit of a concern as grip is already going to be a problem due to the tires not heating issues and windy situation makes it even more hard to control the car and braking at the right distance becomes even more crucial.
  • What happens if FP3 gets cancelled: If FP3 gets cancelled, then it will be immensely exciting but also disadvantageous to some of the drivers. Only a few of the drivers have raced at this circuit before and the majority haven’t. So that wouldn’t be that good. With 2 practice sessions already having been cancelled that will also put the teams in unfamiliar situation as this is the first time they return to this track after 2014, when F1 entered a new era. For some, its a completely new circuit. So, it will surely create a lot of drama.
  • The practice start grid for every session has been properly marked and a photograph for the same has been included in the Race Director’s Notes to avoid any confusion and controversy this time around. This definitely helps some drivers and even helps the FIA Stewards take decisions.
  • A lot of car development has taken place throughout the season and the most development has been achieved by Alfa Romeo and with Kimi Raikkonen creating a record this time around, both if them will be looking to get some valuable points in a race where mishaps are expected, and driver retirements expected.
