DREAM11 IPL 2020: SUPER SUNDAY SUPER OVERS – ANALYSIS!

ANALYSING THE THREE SUPER OVERS OF THE TWO SUPER MATCHES ON A SUPER SUNDAY!

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS vs SUNRISERS HYDERABAD: Super Over

WINNER – Kolkata Knight Riders

PLAYERS of the SUPER OVER – Lockie Ferguson

Kolkata Knight Riders started the Super Over on the right note by giving the ball to the best bowler for them on the day, Lockie Ferguson who had bowled the right pave and was bowling the right lengths to get the ball into the batsman and hit the stump, and that is how he got his first wicket and the second and final wicket in the Super Over on just the first and third balls respectively.

Kolkata Knight Riders had the option to give it to the senior player, Pat Cummins, but they went the right way and gave the ball to Lockie Ferguson. The fielding was good, and the absence of misfields helped Lockie get it right. Sunrisers Hyderabad failed because of the way Lockie bowled and the pressure on them.

Both the batsmen did not defend but rather tried to play it to the boundary, and that caught them and they were completely bowled. Well, luck was also on KKR’s side as the first ball just had to be a bit higher to miss the stumps.

In the second part of the Super Over tie breaker, where KKR were batting, they played right. Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik came out to play and they did not send any pinch hitter as they weren’t chasing a high score. KKR played it very very safe and that helped them. They just struck the ball and quickly took one run and that is what helped them win it without losing a wicket.

SMART PLAY

But one thing, KKR’s move to give the ball to an injured Russell in the final over of the 20 over SRH innings was a big mistake. A big mistake. Lockie Ferguson was their charm and luck and without him KKR would have flat out lost the game.

KINGS XI PUNJAB vs MUMBAI INDIANS

Two Super Overs and the First one was all about the bowlers whereas the Second one was all about the batsmen. So, the First Super Over was all about the yorkers and the right lengths. Mumbai Indians gave the ball to Jasprit Bumrah and he got up to the task with those balls and Nicholas Pooran played a crazy shot and got out to a good running catch by the substitute fielder.

The match then went to the second super over due to a run out. It was not Quinton De Cock’s mistake as he had to do anything and everything he could to get that second run but the possibility of the match not creating history and not going into the second over was very high since the distance by which De Cock got out was not much and that was all because of one misfield, it could have lead to KXIP losing their second super over of DREAM11 IPL 2020.

The Second Super Over was going to happen, the right thing was going to happen instead of what happened in the ICC CWC 2019. The rules were a little quirky. Batsmen who had played in the First Super Over and got out were not eligible to play in the Second Super Over, and the bowlers who had bowled in the First Super Over could not bowl in the second.

Now this not only spices up things but can also become favourable for one side over the other depending on how many wickets were lost in the first Super Over and how many in form consistent great batsmen do they have in their Playing XI in the match. Both the teams playing had a great batting unit and that did balance it to a great extent.

But the bowlers, probably Mumbai Indians were the one who had the edge over KXIP with Trent Boult bowling for them. But some great fielding helped KXIP keep it easy but it was the batsmen who stole the game away for KXIP.

The second Super Over was all about the batsmen and Chris Jordan’s over was saved from being a more devastating one by a great fielding display by Mayank Agarwal, which could have been a catch only if Arshdeep would have acted in time and focused on the ball Mayank threw more than he was focused on Mayank falling probably. Nevertheless, they saved 4 runs and eased the pressure on their team by a whole one boundary.

Chris Gayle was sent alongwith Mayank Agarwal and they both cruised to victory with a galore of shots which yielded them one 6 and two fours. A comfortable victory.

Now, what would have happened if Rohit Sharma would have came into bat for MI in the Second Super Over!? Well, that is some great speculation because it isn’t like the batsmen who went out to bat for MI, were not good or were not in – form. So, that can probably left as a speculation but probably Rohit Sharma might have got them a couple more runs against Chris Jordan based on what was happening.

The run by Chris Jordan, which drove the match into the Super Over was one of the dumbest and worst display of cricketing. He was also involved in the not short run but still called short run against DC, which led to KXIP losing that match. He covered a total of 5 extra metres while taking that run for no proper reason. Get some running practice in please, Jordan.
