DREAM11 IPL 2020: ANALYSING HOW THE FIRST 6 WICKETS THAT SHAPED CSK’S INNINGS FELL, CSK vs MI

CSK were down big time in the match against Mumbai Indians in Sharjah in the DREAM11 IPL 2020! The 6 quick wickets that fell in the first 7 overs itself shaped the whole innings of CSK and taking a look at how those wickets fell provide us with crucial and tactical information. Analysing how the wickets fell, how the bowlers set the batsmen up and what were the important factors that lead to the wickets falling. A good read wicket by wicket!

Wicket no. 1 – Trent Boult played with Gaikwad. He did something known as a “setup”. Trent Boult started by bowling into the middle stump. He maintained speeds of above 130 throughout the over and that is some good pace which he is putting onto the ball. Boult bowls faster while bowling good length and not completely attacking the batsman’s pads, reduces the pace but continues the length and similar line, increases the pace, similar line and then boom! Second fastest ball of the full over and bowling full length towards the leg stump attacking the batsman and Ruturaj Gaikwad, not very experienced, is a little late and off on his action and Boult gets his wicket. Gaikwad might not have even been expecting that kind of a ball and that pace.

Trent Boult did not continue with one line and he went from middle stump to wide off stump and then came back into leg stump. He challenged Gaikwad everywhere and then a quick ball with a new length. This was not across, it was straight, and Gaikwad didn’t seem to be expecting that. The three main contributing factors were that Boult changed the line and length tremendously, a great increase in pace and he caught Ruturaj Gaikwad off guard.

Trent Boult also finished of the over in a great manner by bowling a good bouncer to Gaikwad.

Wicket no. 2 – Ambati Rayudu faced three balls in his very short innings and all of them were short balls – BOUNCERS! One Bouncer from Trent Boult, as mentioned above, and the other two off Jasprit Bumrah. The first ball Jasprit Bumrah bowled to Rahul Chahar was a short ball towards the offside of the batsman and it went for two runs, a ball similar to what Boult had bowled.

The net ball was also a short ball, leg side of the batsman and Rayudu wants to score more runs, tries to hit the ball away but seems unsure as he doesn’t actually play a complete shot as such for runs. An edge and into the safe hands of Quinton De Cock. Rayudu was pushed in and he was playing too close and tucked into his body and that led to him not following the ball properly and the ball hit the edge and went up. Bumrah had also taken some pace off which meant that the ball did not miss the bat.

The next ball – another wicket!

Wicket no. 3 – A Golden Duck! Another not so experienced batsman against a very experienced bowler, some great swing, a golden opportunity and some good fielding by Suryakumar Yadav. Bumrah bowled a good length swinging the ball in towards the batsman and he went to drive it forward and away and he missed it by a bit, an edge and that is why slip fielders are present.

Wicket no. 4 – Faf goes on the off for a caught behind off a full length ball by Trent Boult. Trent Boult again set a batsman up for the wicket. He kept changing and pulling and pushing his length. And he was bowling across. Faf had already missed a good length ball and that was talked as a could have been embarrassment by many, and then Boult pushed the ball with some speed, and Faf had to score some runs but failed to do so, and again safe hands of Quinton De Cock.

Wicket no. 5 – Jadeja, just out of some hitting and proper placement and execution and hence he got executed with a wicket. Jadeja was playing on his legside for runs. The 4th over, bowled by Bumrah was an expensive over in terms of runs from the point of view of Mumbai Indians and that is why Boult was kept back for an over and given the final over of the powerplay. Boult just simple bowled it into Jadeja, allowed his to try and pull it away, and a strategically placed fielder eared them the wicket.

Wicket no. 6 – The wicket that caught the captain of CSK. The ball before went for a six. Chahar was bowling good lengths, except the first ball which was on leg, and had moved from leg stump to the off stump. The ball which went for six was also on the off stump, at around 90 kmph and Dhoni stepped out and forward to use his force and hit it for a six but the next ball went even wider to the off side, was faster, Dhoni stood back and was deceived enough to misjudge the ball and be caught behind.

The main factors were that Chahar moved his length steadily and the last ball to M.S. Dhoni was just wide enough and had the required pace. The added pace meant that Dhoni had to judge the ball fast and play with it and did not have the option of either utilising another second or missing that shot by playing it early.

A GREAT BOWLING PERFORMANCE FOLLOWED BY A GREAT BATTING PERFORMANCE BY MI! Sam Curran got some good runs for his team and even Tahir played some good shots while Batting!
