Explaining and Analysing DC’s steal of Steve Smith in the VIVO IPL Auctions 2021!

Steve Smith – a player who has been someone whom many look upto as an idol, and a player who has a habit of often topping the player ranking charts, and a player who is one of the top batsmen in all formats, is also a player who finds himself in the Auction Poll for Vivo IPL 2021 and not in any team!

PRE – ACUTION PREDICTION: Steve Smith will not go unsold is what is guaranteed, because a player like him definitely cannot go unsold, even if he does not fit into a team perfectly, teams with enough money in their hands will look to pick him up to ensure that their opponent does not gain the advantage and they have a player they can get something good out of. But why does he find himself in such a position?

Rajasthan Royals just weren’t happy with him and releasing him frees a lot of their purse and also frees one slot for an overseas player which they could fill with some good rising talent. In the 2020 IPL season, held in the UAE, Steve Smith scored a mere 311 runs in 14 matches at an average of 25.91 and a Strike Rate of 131.22. If a team ants a pinch hitter, they could go with so many other options who are less expensive and can even bowl overs and take wickets. Steve Smith has not been in great T20I form and for a player like him, at the price at which he was picked – 12.50 Cr INR, that is not sufficient.

ANALYSING DC’S PICK FOR STEVE SMITH.

Steve Smith is a player who has gone

There were only 3 teams where his selection would make sense – Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab) or Chennai Super Kings. In all of the other teams, he just doesn’t. H either creates a great imbalance in the team, or does not fulfill their requirements. The bidding for Steve Smith was started by RCB, and if he would have ended up in RCB, it would have made for an exciting sight with ABD, Kohli and Smith in the same side and then the likes of Paddikal supporting them but that was not the perfect fit for Smith, rift could have been expected and he fitting into the Playing XI also could become a problem, and it would be Smith who might face the problems, and that is something that explains as to why RCB did not continue bidding for him, they were just trying to steal an advantage away from others by buying him cheaply at his base price of INR 2 crore.

Delhi Capitals required that one player, who could play a long innings, and in DC, the pressure to score runs is not focused on one or two players but is more evenly spread. One more thing to take into consideration is the number of available overseas players that a team can fit into their squad and their Playing XI. Smith can be easily made to fit in their batting line – up as and when they want him, and he can even be benched if he does not perform well.

Delhi Capitals will have two overseas pacers – Nortje and Rabada, accompanied with their Indian spin line up. Stoinis proved to be a very beneficial and worthy all – rounder for Delhi Capitals last year, and players like Shimron Hetmyer will be the one who will probably be having that possible rotation with Steve Smith, every few matches based on performance, need and form. Against oppositions such as KKR and KXIP, Delhi Capitals will probably be using Steve Smith even if he is benched for some other matches.

Plus, in DC, Steve Smith finds him under Ricky Ponting’s captaincy and this creates the environment that is needed of connection and proper understanding. Marcus Stoinis is also an Australian and has played a lot with Smith and Ponting will know hw to work these two players properly, and what Smith needs, how he can improve and everything that DC would like Smith to improve a bit.

This buy still left DC will a total of 7 slots, out of which 2 overseas slots remaining and a purse almost equal to that of KKR and SRH. This has been a very intelligent and great steal.

STEVE SMITH WOULD BE DISAPPOINTED AND HE SHOULD BE A LITTLE!
