SEMI -FINAL WRAP UP FOR THE FINALISTS

The two finalists got the results the wanted and what would have been even more satisfying for them would have been that they got it in manners that would had several wins in the victory as both sides gave performances that saw them dominate the matches to some extent. The bit that was intriguing and made for some interesting plays in the matches was that almost all things happened as would be expected to some extent in terms of what would lead to a victory and a loss, exact factors and probabilities as analysed and previewed in PREVIEWS FOR BOTH SEMI – FINALS (SF1 & SF2), based on performance and trends, is what happened out of several other possibilities and outcomes. And if this follows in the Final Match as well, especially in the first innings then one of the teams, with the upper hand pre – match, will be very confident of the win.

Australia was expected to dominate, so much so that even West Indies knew that they were most probably going to be dominated. The toss being won by West Indies allowed them to take control of the decision and although, in a day match, batting first would have again allowed them the boost or benefit of having to defend instead of chase, the decision to bowl first was not surprising and the reason explained by their two slip(two catchers next to the wicket – keeper) field set up. They expected good movement and edge out the Australians. It was a good ploy against Healy who was troubled with movement in recent times, which was a developing weakness and the Australians would look to attack to get the confidence and score in. The first 10 overs were not bad for West Indies in terms of the run rate which was below 5, but not being able to take wickets in the first 10 required them to take groups or pairs of them in quick succession now to get the better of this side, which they completely erred in with their field setting, bowling plans at specific points and the bad catching on the day. West Indies, not having the batting services of two players due to injuries and then going to open with Rashada Williams instead of Matthews set them back by not just 2 non – batting wickets but also another in the form of Williams.

The victory of England over South Africa was a testament of the recovery England had shown and the surprising lack of close-to-peak performance by the South Africans. But the manner of the victory or rather the events that led to the victory were interesting. It was a probability that the role or performance reversal that happened in terms of the fielding display would take place but it was an extreme version where it was a complete opposite performance in terms of how well England fielded and how bad South Africa fielded as compared to the last time these sides met in this edition of the World Cup. South Africa was beaten by the over – reliance on Laura Wolvaardt and that was it.

THE FINAL

It will be the big clash. The big mega clash. Two sides. The leaders in world cricket. The standard of performance. England, although ha a very successful match ending in victory have still not played the comprehensive team performance, whereas on the other hand, the Australian women gave a complete comprehensive team performance but with the caveat that it was against a weakened West Indian side.

Dani Wyatt’s measured performance was key and encouraging for the English side and with it being an off match for Tammy Beaumont but still her taking learnings from that match, if the English side do come to the realization that what they need more importantly is a subdued yet wicket – less powerplay 1 while batting but on the other hand, against Australia, they need to be cautious against Alana King and the middle – over pacers as the side is facing issues in getting that momentum against the spinners well, with King able to provide the different bowling with flight and pushing the players playing against their confidence and making it harder to judge the delivery once or twice every over. This is what will make it hard for the English side to find the proper approach. Now, even Australia has to face Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean. But a side with confidence and with more lives in terms of number of players performing has a better focus and performance on field, and it is easier for them to deal with challenges but more importantly Australians are better players of spin in the current scenario. The interesting matchup will be against Kate Cross, because the line and length bowling of Kate Cross will be a difference in the match and is something that could work even if England are unable to get the advantage of bowling with moisture (evening time) and as Kate Cross will even otherwise be one who they will look to attack as they will have that as backup to play out Ecclestone. If Healy or Haynes does bat through the middle overs, then Cross’s overs could become game defining because in that scenario, those overs will either yield huge runs for Australia or bring in the crucial wickets.

WHO’S WINNING IT?

Australia. England will fail to defend their title one again is what seems to be the case pre – match with all known factors and conditions. A lot of moisture or mist is not expected in the game and neither are any new injuries reported. The Australians will be getting the fundamental advantage of form and confidence. England need Dani Wyatt to continue her Semi – Final performance while Australia will again look to avail as many resources as they can in their bowling department. The game could well be pretty much decided unofficially in the first innings itself, and will most probably not last more than 95 overs at the most.
